Villager Name Generator
Humble medieval names for farmers, smiths and innkeepers.
Villager Name Generator
The villager name generator fills your world with ordinary people: millers, smiths, shepherds, alewives and innkeepers. It creates medieval-style names for non-player characters in tabletop role-playing games, video games and historical or fantasy fiction.
Examples
| Villager | Example name |
|---|---|
| Farmer | Wat Hayward |
| Innkeeper | Margery Brewer |
| Blacksmith | Osric Smith |

Where medieval surnames came from
Before the 13th century most English villagers had only one name. To tell two Walters apart, neighbours added a description: Walter the miller, Walter at the wood, Walter son of Hugh. Over generations these descriptions became fixed family names. That is why the surnames in this generator fall into three groups:
- Occupations: Smith, Thatcher, Fletcher (arrow maker), Chandler (candle maker), Reeve (village official).
- Places: Atwood, Underwood, Brook, Hill, Marsh.
- Nicknames and landscapes: Green, Meadows, Bywater.
Tips for game masters
- Match the surname to the job for a quick, memorable NPC – or deliberately mismatch it: a Baker who works as a gravedigger is an instant story hook.
- Keep names short. Villagers are minor characters; players remember Wat more easily than Wymond.
- Create families. Generate a list and give three NPCs the same surname to build relationships, rivalries and gossip.
Male and female names
Medieval women often kept their own given name but were identified through their family or trade: Maud the alewife or Joan Fuller. The female list includes common period names such as Agnes, Cecily, Margery and Matilda, while the male list covers names found in manor records, from Walter and Hugh to Cuthbert and Dunstan. Mix both for a believable village.
Use the Victorian Name Generator for later periods, or the Random Kingdom Name Generator to name the realm your villagers live in.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of names does the villager generator make?
Medieval English peasant names: everyday first names like Walter, Cuthbert, Agnes and Maud, paired with surnames that come from trades (Miller, Thatcher) or places (Atwood, Underwood).
Why do so many surnames describe jobs?
In medieval England most people had only a given name. As villages grew, people were distinguished by their trade or where they lived, and those descriptions became hereditary surnames.
Can I use this for Minecraft or Stardew-style games?
Yes. The names fit any game with farming villages, medieval towns or fantasy NPCs. Turn off the surname for short names that fit in small name tags.
How do I name a whole village?
Choose All, set the count to 25 or more and generate. Reuse a few surnames to create families – everyone called Miller is probably related.
