Random Team Generator

Split a group of people into fair, random teams in one click. Paste a list of names, choose how many teams you want – or how many people should be on each team – and the generator shuffles everyone into balanced groups. It is perfect for PE classes, five-a-side football, pub quizzes, hackathons, breakout rooms and office games.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste the names, one per line or separated by commas.
  2. Choose Number of teams or People per team and enter the number.
  3. Pick a naming style: numbers, letters, colors or animals.
  4. Press Generate to shuffle again until everybody is happy (or not – it's random!).

Fair and balanced

The tool deals shuffled names round-robin, so with 11 players and 3 teams you get teams of 4, 4 and 3 – never 5, 5 and 1. Every arrangement is equally likely, which makes the result hard to argue with. Nothing is stored and nothing leaves your browser.

Ideas for using random teams

  • Classrooms – make group projects and lab partners without picking favourites.
  • Sports – split a casual football, basketball or volleyball game into even sides.
  • Meetings – create breakout groups for workshops and retrospectives.
  • Game nights – form trivia, charades or Pictionary teams.
  • Tournaments – draw pairs for doubles or seed groups before a bracket.

Tips

Use the colors style when teams wear bibs, and the letters style for pairs or seating plans. Copy the result to share it in a chat, or download it as a text file. To balance skill levels, run the generator separately for strong and new players and merge the teams with the same name.

Frequently Asked Questions

It shuffles the names with a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by your browser's cryptographic random generator and deals them out one by one, like cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one person.

Yes. Set Split by to People per team and enter the size. With 12 names and a size of 5 you get three teams of 4, because the tool keeps the teams as even as possible.

Duplicates are removed (ignoring upper and lower case) so nobody ends up on two teams. If two people really share a name, add an initial, such as Sam K and Sam P.

Turn on Mark a captain and the first randomly drawn player of each team is marked with (C). Press Generate again for a new draw.
