Random Year Generator

The Random Year Generator picks a random year within any range you set – a year in the 1980s, a random 20th-century year, a birth year for a character or a completely random year from 1 AD to 9999. Turn on Show year facts to see, for each year, how long ago it was, its decade and century, whether it was a leap year, which weekday January 1 fell on and its Chinese zodiac animal.

Example output

1984 – 42 years ago, 1980s, 20th century, leap year (366 days), Jan 1 was a Sunday, year of the Rat

Ideas

History quizzes. Generate a year and ask: what happened that year? Who was president, which songs topped the charts, what was invented? It's a great classroom warm-up and family game.

Writing and role-play. Give characters believable birth years, or pick the year your story is set in and research the world of that time.

Test data. Developers need random years for forms, age checks and date validation. Use a range like 1940–2008 for adult birth years and sort the list oldest first.

Time-travel games. Ask friends where they'd go if they landed in a random year, or roll a year and cook a dish or play music from that decade.

Nostalgia nights. Roll a year between 1970 and 2010 and watch a film or listen to an album released that year.

How to use

Set the From and To years, choose how many years you need and the order, then press Generate. No repeats gives unique years and the result can be copied or downloaded. Everything runs locally in your browser.
