Random Ethnicity Generator

The random ethnicity generator picks ethnic and cultural groups from around the world. It is designed for writers building diverse casts, game masters fleshing out non-player characters, teachers preparing geography or social-studies lessons, and developers who need realistic, varied sample data.

Regions covered

Region Example groups
Europe Basque, Catalan, Sámi, Romani, Welsh
Middle East & North Africa Kurdish, Armenian, Berber (Amazigh), Druze, Laz
Sub-Saharan Africa Yoruba, Amhara, Maasai, Zulu, Tuareg
Asia Hakka, Hmong, Tamil, Uyghur, Ainu
Americas Quechua, Maya, Cherokee, Inuit, Garifuna
Oceania Māori, Samoan, Chamorro, Torres Strait Islander

Using it for fiction and games

A cast where every character shares the same background can feel flat. Generating an ethnicity for each character is a quick prompt to research a culture you know less about – its naming traditions, food, festivals and history – and to write characters with more texture. Treat the result as a starting point for research, not as a stereotype to fill in.

Using it in the classroom

Generate five groups and ask students to find where each lives, which language they speak and one tradition they celebrate. Many groups on the list span several countries, which is a good way to explain the difference between an ethnic group and a nation state.

Respectful use

Ethnicity is a matter of self-identification and cannot be guessed from a name or appearance. The generator is meant for creative and educational purposes only. The list is necessarily incomplete – there are thousands of ethnic groups worldwide – and focuses on a broad, representative sample from every inhabited continent.

Tips

Use Starts with for alphabet-based quizzes, and turn off No repeats only if you need more results than a region contains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nationality is legal citizenship of a country. Ethnicity describes a shared cultural heritage – language, ancestry, traditions or religion – that often crosses borders. A Kurdish person may be a Turkish, Iraqi or German national, for example. For citizenships use our Random Nationality Generator.
