God Name Generator

The god name generator helps world-builders, game masters and writers create deities for fantasy settings. Pick a divine domain – sky, sea, war, death, nature, sun or wisdom – and get names with titles that sound like they have been carved into temple walls for thousands of years.

Domains

Domain Example
Sky & storms Thunos the Thunderer
Sea & rivers Nyris, Lady of Tides
War & strength Korrax Shieldbreaker
Death & underworld Mornar, Keeper of Souls
Nature & harvest Demia, Mother of Harvests
Sun & light Solros the Radiant
Wisdom & magic Athna, Weaver of Fate

How mythic names sound

Real mythologies share some patterns. Gods' names are usually short and easy to chant – Zeus, Thor, Ra, Isis – and often end in open vowels or soft -s sounds. Death gods tend to have darker consonants, sea gods flowing sounds, and sun gods bright vowels. The generator uses different syllables per domain to imitate this.

The title matters just as much. Worshippers rarely use a god's name directly; they pray to the Thunderer or the Pale Judge. Titles also tell players what a deity cares about without a page of lore.

Building your pantheon

  • Start with a structure: a ruling sky god, siblings for sea and underworld, and children for war, harvest and wisdom.
  • Add conflict: two gods who share a domain, or a forgotten god whose title has been erased.
  • Give each god a symbol – a hammer, a wave, a closed eye – so clerics and temples are easy to describe.

Pair this tool with the Cultist Name Generator to create the followers of your darker gods.
