Tiefling Name Generator
Infernal names and virtue names for tiefling characters.
Tiefling Name Generator
The tiefling name generator creates names for the horned, fiend-touched characters of Dungeons & Dragons. Choose between infernal names for female or male tieflings and the famous virtue names, or mix all three for a quick list of options.
Two ways to name a tiefling
Infernal names are inherited from the tongue of the Nine Hells. They are often given by tiefling parents and mark the child as part of a proud, outcast lineage. Examples: Akmenos, Damakos, Kallista, Orianna, Nemeia.
Virtue names are chosen. A tiefling raised among humans, or one who wants to define themselves by something other than their bloodline, might pick a word that represents an ideal or a burden: Hope, Glory, Despair, Quest, Weary. The word does not have to be positive – a name like Torment can be a confession as much as a goal.
| Type | Example | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Infernal (male) | Mordai | Proud of a fiendish heritage |
| Infernal (female) | Rieta | Mysterious, otherworldly |
| Virtue | Reverence | A deliberate choice of identity |

Roleplay ideas
- Give your character both kinds of names and decide which one they use with friends.
- Let the virtue name be ironic: a tiefling called Mercy who never shows any.
- Ask what the infernal name means. Many players invent a short translation such as "ember of the pit" to add flavour.
Combine this tool with the DND Name Generator to name the rest of your party.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a tiefling virtue name?
Some tieflings reject their infernal heritage, or never knew it, and choose a word that represents an ideal, a feeling or a goal as their name: Hope, Creed, Sorrow or Torment. The name often says something about how the character sees their own destiny.
What are infernal names?
Infernal names come from the language of devils. They sound ancient and exotic, often ending in -akas, -os, -ria or -lith. Tieflings raised in tiefling communities usually carry one of these.
Do tieflings have surnames?
Rarely. Most tieflings are born to human families, and their appearance tends to isolate them, so the generator gives one name. You can add a human family name if your character grew up with their parents.
Can a tiefling change their name?
Yes, and it makes a great story beat. A tiefling might use their infernal birth name as a child and choose a virtue name after an important event in their life.
