DND Name Generator

The DND name generator creates character names for Dungeons & Dragons and similar fantasy role-playing games. Pick a race, decide whether you want a family or clan name, and generate a list of names for your next player character, a recurring villain or the dozen NPCs your players suddenly want to talk to.

Races and naming styles

Race Style Example
Human Familiar medieval names Bertram Stormwind
Elf Long and melodic Thalion Galanodel
Dwarf Short, hard consonants Kildek Battlehammer
Halfling Friendly with cozy surnames Rosie Tealeaf
Gnome Playful, many syllables Zookbin Fizzlebang
Half-orc Blunt, one word Krusk
Tiefling Infernal, exotic Akmenos

How the names are built

Each race has its own lists of starting syllables, optional middle sounds and endings. The generator combines one of each and then filters out names that are too short or too long. Surnames come from curated lists that match the race: elven family names, dwarven clans, cheerful halfling homesteads and odd gnomish nicknames.

Naming tips for game masters

  • Prepare a list before the session. Generate 20 names per race and keep them next to your notes. When the party asks the innkeeper's name you have one ready.
  • Let the name hint at the culture. A human from a northern kingdom can share sounds with the dwarves who live nearby.
  • Keep spelling readable. Players remember names they can pronounce. If a result is hard to say, generate again.

Building a party

Choose All with a count of five or six to get a ready-made adventuring party. Mixed results are also useful for populating a city: merchants, guards, priests and rivals all need names, and a varied list makes the world feel lived in. For deeper options, use the dedicated Elf, Dwarf, Dragonborn and Tiefling name generators.

The surnames and clan names follow the examples in the core rulebooks, while the given names are built from syllables in the same style. That gives you names that feel familiar at the table without copying the exact lists.

In most D&D settings half-orcs and tieflings rarely carry a family name. Half-orcs usually use one orcish or human name and tieflings often use a single infernal name, so the generator leaves the surname out for them.

Yes. The names are generated randomly and are free to use in home games, streams, novels and commercial projects.
