Frequently Asked Questions
How many countries are in the list?
195: the 193 member states of the United Nations plus the two observer states, Vatican City and Palestine.
Why does Turkey, Russia or Egypt appear on only one continent?
Transcontinental countries are listed once, under the continent where their capital is: Turkey in Asia, Russia in Europe and Egypt in Africa. Cyprus and the Caucasus states are counted as Asia.
What is the ISO code?
The two-letter ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code used in domain names (.fr), currency and language tags (fr-FR) and most databases.
Why do some flags show as two letters?
Flags are emoji built from the ISO code. Some systems, notably Windows, do not draw flag emoji and show the letters instead – the country name is still correct.
