Random ZIP Code Generator

This random ZIP code generator produces US postal codes that look and behave like real ones. Pick a state to keep every code inside that state's range, switch on ZIP+4 for the nine-digit format, or add the city and state to get lines such as 78701 – Austin, TX.

How US ZIP codes are structured

A ZIP (Zone Improvement Plan) code has five digits:

Digits Meaning Example
1st National area (0 = Northeast … 9 = West Coast) 90210
1st–3rd Sectional center facility, tied to a state 90210
4th–5th Local post office or delivery area 90210
+4 Delivery segment such as a block or building 90210-1234

The generator uses the official 3-digit prefix ranges for all 50 states and Washington, D.C., so a Texas ZIP always starts with 75–79 and a Massachusetts ZIP with 010–027.

When to use random ZIP codes

  • Form validation – check that your input accepts leading zeros and the optional -1234 suffix.
  • Shipping and tax tests – feed checkout flows with codes from different states and regions.
  • Database seeding – fill a customers table with plausible postal data instead of 00000.
  • Teaching – show students how postal regions are laid out across the country.

Tips

Keep ZIP codes in a text column: storing 02139 as a number silently turns it into 2139. When you need full addresses rather than codes, use the random address generator; for international formats such as UK postcodes or Canadian postal codes, try the billing postal code generator. Everything is generated locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each code starts with a 3-digit prefix that the USPS assigns to the selected state, so it has the right shape and region. The last two digits are random, which means a code may or may not be in active use – treat it as test data.

ZIP+4 adds a hyphen and four digits to the 5-digit ZIP code, e.g. 73301-0001. The extra digits identify a delivery segment such as a city block, an office building or a large mail recipient.

The city is always in the same state as the ZIP prefix, but it is not guaranteed to be the exact post office for that code. Use an official USPS lookup when you need a verified city/ZIP pair.

ZIP codes run roughly from the northeast (0xxxx for New England, New Jersey and Puerto Rico) to the west (9xxxx for California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii). Leading zeros are significant, so store ZIP codes as text, not numbers.
