Random Last Name Generator
Need a surname for a character, a placeholder for a database or a fresh idea for a family in your story? The random last name generator picks family names from 17 cultural backgrounds. Choose an origin or mix them all, decide how many surnames you want and generate a new list with one click.
Where surnames come from
Last names usually tell a story. Many English surnames describe a trade – Smith, Baker, Fletcher (arrow maker) or Thatcher. Irish and Scottish names often begin with O' ("grandson of") or Mac/Mc ("son of"). Scandinavian names ending in -sson or -sen and Russian names ending in -ov are patronymic in origin, while many Japanese surnames describe places in the landscape, such as Yamamoto ("base of the mountain") or Tanaka ("in the rice field").
Options
- Origin – one of 17 groups, or All for a worldwide mix.
- Starts with – only surnames beginning with the given letters.
- Case – keep the original spelling, or convert to UPPERCASE / lowercase.
- No repeats – every surname in the list is different.
Practical uses
Writers can give an entire family or town consistent, believable surnames. Developers and testers can fill sample records with realistic data, including apostrophes, umlauts (Müller, Krüger), Polish letters (Wiśniewski) and Turkish characters (Yılmaz) that often break poorly written code. Teachers can create anonymised examples for class exercises.
Combine with first names
Pair the results with the random boy, girl or male name generators. The male name generator can even add a surname from the same origin automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which surname origins are available?
English, Irish, Scottish, German, Italian, Spanish & Latin American, French, Dutch, Polish, Scandinavian, Russian, Turkish, Arabic, Indian, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. Each list contains frequent family names from that culture.
Why are some surnames written with lowercase prefixes?
Dutch surnames such as de Jong or van der Meer traditionally keep the prefix in lowercase when written after a first name. Choose UPPERCASE in the Case field if you need a uniform format for forms or labels.
Can I generate surnames that start with a specific letter?
Yes, type one or more letters in Starts with. The filter ignores case, so "mc" finds McCarthy and McLoughlin.
