  • Road-trip roulette: generate one state from your region and plan a weekend there.
  • Capitals quiz: turn on Capital, cover the right half of the list and test yourself or your class.
  • Fifty-state challenge: shuffle all 50 and work through them in order – books set in each state, regional recipes, or a state a week for a blog series.
  • Fair assignments: give each team member a state to research without arguing about who gets Hawaii.

Census regions at a glance

The US Census Bureau groups states into four regions. The Northeast runs from Maine to Pennsylvania, the Midwest from Ohio to the Dakotas and Kansas, the South from Delaware and Maryland down to Texas and Oklahoma, and the West covers the Mountain and Pacific states, including Alaska and Hawaii. Pick a region to keep the draw local.
