Random Flag Generator
Draw random national flags from 195 countries and display them as big flag cards. Use it as a flag quiz, a classroom warm-up, a way to choose a country for a project, or just to discover flags you have never seen before.
Three display modes
| Mode | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Flag + country | Learning flags and their countries |
| Flag only (quiz) | Testing yourself or a class – the names are hidden |
| Flag + ISO code | Matching flags to two-letter codes like DE or JP |
Filter by continent to focus your practice: European flags are full of tricolours and Nordic crosses, African flags often use the Pan-African colours green, yellow and red, and many Pacific flags carry the Southern Cross.
Vexillology in a nutshell
The study of flags is called vexillology. Good flag design is often summed up in five rules: keep it simple enough for a child to draw from memory, use meaningful symbolism, stick to two or three basic colours, avoid lettering or seals, and be distinctive. Nepal's double pennant is the only non-rectangular national flag, Switzerland and Vatican City use square flags, and Denmark's Dannebrog is often called the oldest national flag still in use.
Ideas
- Run a ten-flag quiz at the start of a geography lesson.
- Pick a flag of the day for a classroom or office board.
- Draw one flag and research its symbolism – colours, stars and emblems almost always have a story.
Flags are emoji rendered by your device, so no images are downloaded and everything works offline once the page is loaded.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the flag quiz mode work?
Choose Flag only (quiz) and the generator shows flags without names. Name each one, then switch back to Flag + country with the same settings to learn more – or simply press Generate for a new round.
Why do I see letters instead of flags?
Flags are emoji made from two regional-indicator letters. Windows does not include flag emoji in its default font, so it shows the letters (for example FR). macOS, iOS, Android and most Linux desktops draw the flags.
Which flags are included?
The national flags of 195 countries – all UN member states plus Vatican City and Palestine. Territories, regions and historical flags are not included.
Which flags are hardest to tell apart?
Classic pairs are Chad and Romania (almost identical), Indonesia and Monaco, Australia and New Zealand, Ireland and Côte d'Ivoire, and the Nordic crosses of Norway and Iceland.
