Elf Name Generator

The elf name generator creates graceful, otherworldly names for elven characters in Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, World of Warcraft-style fantasy, novels and fan fiction. Choose the elven culture and gender, decide whether you want a family name, and generate a list of original names in seconds.

Elven cultures

Culture Feel Example
High elf Ancient, noble and melodic Yathewyn Lightsong
Wood elf Light, earthy, close to nature Lyrilee Greenbough
Dark elf Sharp, sinister, apostrophes Quennae Mizzrym

Each culture has separate syllables for female and male names, plus its own family names – Silverleaf and Evenstar for high elves, Oakenheel and Fernwhistle for wood elves, Nightveil and Do'Urden-style houses for dark elves.

What makes a name sound elvish?

Elvish names in fantasy tend to use flowing consonants such as l, r, n, th and s, many vowels and endings like -iel, -wyn, -ion and -ra. Hard sounds such as k, g and x are rare – except among dark elves, where they signal danger. The generator follows these conventions so the results fit naturally into most fantasy settings.

Elves and naming in role-playing games

In many D&D settings young elves use a "child name" until they come of age at around 100 years, when they choose an adult name. You can roleplay this: generate a short name for a young elf and a longer, more ornate one for their adult identity. Family names are often poetic translations, so a character might introduce themselves as Ilina of House Starbloom.

Tips

  • Keep the family name for formal introductions and use the given name in dialogue.
  • Make siblings share the first syllable – Aeriel and Aeran – to hint at a family tradition.
  • Pair this tool with the Fantasy Name Generator for humans and the Dwarf Name Generator for the rest of the party.
