Dwarf Name Generator

Dwarves are stubborn, proud and fond of names that sound like a hammer hitting an anvil. The dwarf name generator builds sturdy given names from hard syllables and pairs them with clan names drawn from mining, smithing and battle. Use it for Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, fantasy novels or any world with mountain halls and deep mines.

Example names

Gender Given name With clan

Female Dagra Dagra Hammerfall

Anatomy of a dwarf name

Dwarven given names usually have one or two syllables, start with strong consonants (B, D, G, K, Th) and end in sounds like -in, -rik, -grim or -dek. Female names share the same hard openings but often finish with -hild, -dis or -runn, a nod to the Old Norse names that inspired Tolkien's dwarves. The generator combines these patterns, so names feel authentic while staying original.

Clan names

Clan names describe what a family is proud of: their craft (Copperpot, Fireforge), their home (Granitehelm, Deepdelver), their fighting style (Battlehammer, Thunderaxe) or a famous ancestor's feature (Stonebeard, Steelbrow). A few traditional-sounding clan names like Holderhek and Rumnaheim are included for a more classic feel.

Role-playing tips

  • Dwarves rarely give their clan name lightly. Have your character introduce themselves as Hariin, son of Thrain, of Clan Goldfist in formal moments.
  • Give a whole clan the same naming pattern – for example every child of a smith ends in -rik.
  • A dwarf who has lost their clan, or been exiled, makes a compelling backstory.
