Dragonborn Name Generator

The dragonborn name generator creates names for the proud dragon-blooded humanoids of Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition. Choose a gender, decide whether to add a clan name and generate as many draconic names as you need for a player character, a clan elder or an entire dragonborn war band.

Anatomy of a dragonborn name

Dragonborn usually carry three names:

  1. Personal name – given at birth, for example Medrash, Kriv or Sora.
  2. Clan name – the most important part, inherited and defended with honour, for example Kepeshkmolik or Myastan.
  3. Childhood name – an affectionate nickname such as Climber or Shieldbiter that some keep as adults.

This tool generates the first two. If you want a childhood name, add a simple English word that describes something your character did as a hatchling.

Examples

Gender Example name
Male Balasar Daardendrian

Why clan comes first

Dragonborn society values the clan above the self. A dragonborn who dishonours their clan may be cast out, and the clan name is often the first thing spoken when two strangers meet. When roleplaying a formal scene you can flip the order: "Of clan Delmirev, I am Arjhan."

Tips for playing a dragonborn

  • Give your character a short personal name the table can say quickly in combat.
  • Use the clan name in dramatic moments – oaths, introductions and confrontations.
  • Tie the clan to a history: a fallen dragon ancestor, an old feud or a sworn duty to a temple.

Frequently Asked Questions

A dragonborn has a personal name, a clan name and often a childhood nickname. The clan name comes first in formal settings because the clan matters more than the individual, but most adventurers introduce themselves with the personal name first.

Dragonborn clan names imitate the Draconic language, which has many hard consonants and long compound words. Names such as Clethtinthiallor or Ophinshtalajiir sound ancient and are meant to be spoken with pride.

Slightly. Male names often end in harsh sounds like -ash, -jhan or -thar, while female names lean towards -ra, -ri or -inda. Both share the same clan names.

Not directly, but you can match the sound to the ancestry: harsh, hissing names suit black or green dragon heritage, and bright, ringing names suit gold or silver.
