Random Location Generator
Random GPS coordinates anywhere on Earth, with map links.
Random Location Generator
Generate random GPS coordinates anywhere on Earth or inside a chosen region, then open them on a map with one click. Explorers use it to discover places they would never search for, developers use it to test map and geofencing features, and teachers use it for latitude-and-longitude exercises.
Regions
| Region | Box (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Whole world | 90°S – 90°N, every longitude |
| World (60°S–75°N) | Skips Antarctica and the high Arctic |
| Contiguous USA | 25°N – 49°N, 124.7°W – 67°W |
| Europe, Asia, Africa, Americas, Oceania | Rough continental boxes |
Inside the box, points are uniform by area: the generator picks the sine of the latitude uniformly, so high latitudes do not get more than their fair share of points.
Output formats
- Decimal degrees –
48.85837, 2.29448, the format most apps and APIs expect. - Degrees, minutes, seconds – the nautical and aviation format, e.g. 48°51′30.1″N 2°17′40.1″E.
- Google Maps link – paste into a browser or click the links under the results.
- JSON –
{"lat":48.85837,"lng":2.29448}objects for fixtures and seed data.
Ideas
- Random Street View trip: open a point on the map and drop into the nearest street-level imagery.
- GeoGuessr-style game: one person generates a location, the others guess the country.
- Developer testing: check distance calculations, clustering, reverse geocoding and time-zone lookups with points from every hemisphere.
- Writing and art prompts: draw a place and imagine who lives there.
Coordinates are computed in your browser; no location data is collected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the locations evenly spread?
Yes. Latitude is drawn so that every square kilometre has the same chance, rather than picking latitude uniformly. Uniform latitude would crowd points near the poles, where lines of longitude converge.
Why do so many points land in the ocean?
About 71% of the Earth is water, so a truly random point is usually at sea. Pick a continent or the contiguous USA for mostly-land results; the boxes are approximate, so coastal regions can still include some water.
What is the difference between decimal degrees and DMS?
Decimal degrees write a coordinate as one number (40.7128, -74.0060); degrees-minutes-seconds split it into 40°42′46.1″N 74°0′21.6″W. Negative latitude means south, negative longitude means west.
How precise are 5 or 6 decimal places?
One decimal place of a degree is about 11 km. Five decimals are roughly 1 m and six about 11 cm – more precision than most GPS receivers deliver.
