Facebook Italics and Twitalics Generator

Want to put emphasis on a word in a Facebook post, a tweet or an Instagram caption? These apps do not have an italic button, but you can still write in italics by using Unicode italic letters. Type your text above and copy one of five slanted styles.

Five italic styles

  1. Italic (serif) – the classic book-style italic, closest to what you see in printed text.
  2. Italic sans-serif – a cleaner, modern slant that matches the Facebook and X interface font.
  3. Bold italic (serif) – heavy and slanted for strong emphasis.
  4. Bold italic sans-serif – punchy headline style for announcements.
  5. Script – a handwritten cursive slant for a more personal look.

How to use italics on Facebook

Type or paste the sentence, copy the style you like and paste it into the Facebook composer. You can italicise just one word: type the word alone, copy its italic version, and paste it in the middle of your normal sentence. The same trick works in Messenger, comments, page bios and event descriptions.

Twitalics on X (Twitter)

Twitter users coined "Twitalics" for italic tweets. Because every Unicode italic letter counts as two characters, keep italics for titles of books, films and songs, or for a single emphasised word. Hashtags written in italic letters will not be recognised as hashtags, so leave those in normal text.

Good practice

Screen readers may announce italic Unicode letters as mathematical symbols, so avoid styling whole posts. For bold emphasis use the Facebook Bold Text generator, for crossed-out jokes use Strikethrough Text for Facebook, and browse every style in the Font Generator. The older Italic Font Generator is still available too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for normal posts or comments. Facebook only offers rich formatting in a few places, such as group posts with the formatting toolbar and Notes. Unicode italic letters work everywhere because they are regular characters.

Twitalics is a nickname for italic text on Twitter (now X). Since tweets have no formatting buttons, people paste Unicode Mathematical Italic letters to emphasise a word.

Yes. Each styled letter is outside the Basic Multilingual Plane and is counted as two characters by X, so a fully italic tweet runs out of space faster. Italicise only the words that need emphasis.
