YAML to Excel
Convert YAML data to an Excel spreadsheet.
YAML to Excel Converter – Download YAML as .xlsx
The YAML to Excel converter creates a real Excel workbook from YAML data. It is made for the moment a colleague asks for "that YAML list, but in a spreadsheet" — a service catalog, a team roster, feature flags per environment, or a batch of test cases. Paste the YAML, review the preview, and download an .xlsx file.
Step by step
- Paste YAML, open a
.ymlfile, or press Sample to try it with a team directory. - The converter parses the YAML and finds the list of records, even if it is nested under a key.
- Each record becomes a row; nested mappings are flattened into columns like
location.office, and short lists (skills: [go, aws]) become a comma-separated cell. - Set the file and sheet names and press the Excel download button above the preview table.
Why not just CSV?
A CSV opened in Excel is re-interpreted: leading zeros disappear, long numbers turn into scientific notation, and non-ASCII characters can break depending on the import settings. The downloaded workbook avoids that because it is a native Office Open XML file created directly from your data. It opens in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, and Numbers.
Copy-paste alternative
The output box shows the table as tab-separated text. Pasting TSV into a spreadsheet fills one cell per value, which is handy when you only need a few rows in an existing workbook. Turn off the header row if you are appending below existing data.
Nothing leaves your browser
Parsing, flattening, and building the workbook all run locally — there's no upload and no sign-up.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get the .xlsx file?
Paste your YAML, check the table preview, and click the Excel download button above the table. The file name and sheet name options set what the workbook and its sheet are called.
What if my YAML is a nested document, not a list?
The converter looks inside the document for the first list of records and turns it into rows; nested fields become dotted columns such as contact.phone. A document without any list is converted to a single row.
Why is there a text output next to the input?
The right-hand box contains the same data as tab-separated values. Copy it and paste it into an open spreadsheet to fill cells directly, without downloading a file.
