Excel to JSON Converter Online
The Excel to JSON converter reads an .xlsx workbook and turns a worksheet into clean JSON. It is the fastest way to get a spreadsheet that a colleague maintains into a web app, a seed script, a test fixture, or a REST request body — no Python, no macros, and no copy-pasting cell by cell. Drop a file on the page, choose a sheet, and copy or download the result.
How the conversion works
An .xlsx file is a ZIP archive of XML parts. The tool unzips it in the browser, reads the shared string table, the sheet data, and the cell styles, and rebuilds every row. Formulas are not re-evaluated; the value Excel cached when the file was last saved is used, which is exactly what you see in the spreadsheet.
Options
- Sheet – choose which worksheet to convert. The preview table below the output always shows the selected sheet.
- First row is a header – header cells become the JSON keys. Turn it off for raw data and the columns are named
column1,column2, and so on. - JSON shape – an array of objects (one object per row) or an array of arrays that keeps the grid layout.
- All sheets – export the whole workbook as
{ "Sheet1": [...], "Sheet2": [...] }. - Indentation – two or four spaces, tabs, or minified JSON for the smallest payload.
Types are preserved
Unlike CSV exports, which flatten everything into text, this converter keeps the cell types stored in the workbook: numbers stay numbers, booleans stay booleans, and date-formatted cells become ISO date strings. Blank rows at the end of the sheet are trimmed, and empty cells inside the data become empty strings so every object has the same set of keys.
Typical uses
Turn a product price list into a JSON catalogue, convert a translation spreadsheet into locale files, or prepare mock data for front-end development. If the data only exists as CSV, use CSV to JSON instead; to go the other way, JSON to Excel builds a workbook from JSON.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my spreadsheet uploaded to a server?
No. The .xlsx file is unzipped and parsed by JavaScript in your browser tab. Nothing is sent over the network, so payroll sheets, customer exports, and other confidential workbooks never leave your computer.
Can I convert an old .xls file?
Only the modern Office Open XML format (.xlsx and .xlsm) is supported. If you open a legacy Excel 97–2003 .xls file, the tool recognises it and asks you to save it as .xlsx in Excel or LibreOffice first.
How are dates and numbers written to JSON?
Numeric cells become JSON numbers and TRUE/FALSE cells become booleans, exactly as Excel stored them. Cells formatted as dates are converted from Excel's serial numbers to ISO 8601 strings such as 2024-03-15, including workbooks that use the 1904 date system.
What happens with workbooks that have several sheets?
Pick one sheet from the Sheet dropdown, or switch on “All sheets” to get a single JSON object whose keys are the sheet names and whose values are the rows of each sheet.
