PNG to BMP Converter

Turn PNG images into Windows bitmaps without installing anything. Pick 24-bit RGB for maximum compatibility or 32-bit RGBA to keep the PNG's alpha channel, then download the .bmp files. The bitmap is assembled byte by byte in your browser, so your images stay private.

24-bit versus 32-bit bitmaps

Option Header Transparency Best for
24-bit RGB BITMAPINFOHEADER (40 bytes) Flattened onto a background color Old software, microcontrollers, printers
32-bit RGBA BITMAPV4HEADER (108 bytes) Kept as an alpha channel Game engines, icon editors, modern apps

The 24-bit variant is the "classic" BMP everybody can read. Transparent PNG pixels are blended onto the background color you choose — white by default — so anti-aliased edges look smooth instead of jagged. The 32-bit variant stores blue, green, red, and alpha for every pixel and declares the channel layout with bit masks, which is how Windows itself writes bitmaps with alpha.

Typical uses

  • Firmware and displays: boot logos for routers, 3D printers, and handheld consoles are often BMP.
  • Windows resources: toolbar images, installer banners (NSIS and Inno Setup use BMP), and cursor sources.
  • Game modding: older engines load textures and fonts from bitmaps.
  • Image-processing exercises: a known, uncompressed layout makes parsing trivial.

Good to know

Rows are stored bottom-up and padded to four bytes, exactly as the specification describes, and the resolution is set to 72 DPI. Color profiles and PNG text chunks are not carried over. To reverse the conversion, use BMP to PNG; to make the bitmap web-friendly, BMP to JPG.

Frequently Asked Questions

Partly. The 32-bit option writes a BITMAPV4HEADER with an alpha mask, which modern programs like GIMP, Paint.NET, and browsers understand. Many older tools ignore the alpha byte, so for maximum compatibility use 24-bit and pick a background color.

PNG compresses losslessly with DEFLATE, while the bitmap stores every pixel raw. A 1000×1000 PNG icon of 40 KB becomes about 3 MB at 24-bit or 4 MB at 32-bit.

Yes. Drop or select multiple files; each one is converted separately and a Download all button appears when more than one file is ready.
