Several files at once, up to 25 MB each. Converted to PNG in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
PNG options
PNG is lossless: pixels and transparency are kept exactly.
GIF to PNG Converter
Convert GIF images into PNG files in your browser with every pixel and the transparent background preserved. Because both formats are lossless and a GIF never has more than 256 colors per frame, the PNG is an exact copy of the image — just in a more modern, more widely editable format.
Why switch from GIF to PNG?
GIF was created in 1987 and its 256-color limit and on/off transparency show its age. PNG was designed in 1996 specifically as a patent-free, more capable replacement. Converting is useful when:
- Editing a still graphic: most editors handle PNG layers, alpha, and color better than GIF.
- Adding soft shadows or smooth edges — PNG's 8-bit alpha channel allows partial transparency, which GIF can't store.
- Uploading to platforms that strip or reject GIF, such as some design tools and print services.
- Grabbing a still from an animation for a thumbnail, preview, or documentation.
Animated GIFs
Browsers decode animated GIFs frame by frame. When you drop an animation here, the converter captures the first frame as it appears when the animation starts. That is perfect for a poster image or thumbnail. If you need every frame as a separate image, a dedicated GIF splitter is the right tool.
What gets converted
The output is a 32-bit RGBA PNG with the same width and height as the GIF's logical screen. The GIF's transparent index becomes alpha 0, every other palette color is written exactly. Comments and application extensions (such as the NETSCAPE loop block) are not part of the PNG.
For a non-transparent photo-style output, use GIF to JPG. To go the other way, see PNG to GIF.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens with animated GIFs?
The converter saves the first frame as a PNG. PNG itself has no widely used animation (APNG exists, but this tool writes a still image). To get every frame, use a GIF splitter.
Is the transparent background kept?
Yes. The transparent palette color of the GIF becomes fully transparent pixels in the PNG, and the remaining colors are copied exactly.
Will the PNG be bigger than the GIF?
It can be slightly bigger or smaller depending on the image. PNG compression is generally more efficient, but the PNG stores full RGBA color instead of a palette. For most stills, sizes are similar.
