JPG to PNG
Turn JPEG photos into lossless PNG files.
Drop JPG images here, or click to browse
Several files at once, up to 25 MB each. Converted to PNG in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
PNG options
PNG is lossless: pixels and transparency are kept exactly.
JPG to PNG Converter
Drop one or more .jpg / .jpeg files above and download them as PNG. Each file is decoded by your browser, drawn on a canvas, and saved again with the lossless PNG encoder. Nothing is sent to a server, so private photos, scans, and screenshots stay on your device.
When converting JPG to PNG makes sense
JPEG is the right format for camera photos, but it is a poor working format. Every time a JPEG is opened, edited, and saved, the encoder runs again and adds another layer of compression artifacts — blocky 8×8 squares, halos around text, and smeared colors. Converting to PNG first freezes the current pixels:
- Editing in several steps. Crop, annotate, and resize without stacking generations of JPEG loss.
- Adding text or graphics. Captions, arrows, and logos stay crisp in PNG, while JPEG blurs hard edges.
- Preparing for transparency. PNG supports an alpha channel, so the file is ready for background removal in an editor.
- Tools that require PNG. Some upload forms, sprite tools, OCR pipelines, and machine-learning datasets only accept PNG.
What does not change
The conversion is pixel-exact: width, height, and colors are identical to what the browser displays for the JPG. Camera EXIF data such as GPS position, camera model, and date is not copied, which is often a privacy bonus. Browsers apply the EXIF orientation flag while decoding, so portrait photos come out upright.
File size expectations
Expect the PNG to be larger — often three to ten times for photos. For screenshots or graphics saved as JPG, the PNG can be similar in size or even smaller. If you only need a smaller photo, keep it as JPG or try PNG to JPG with a lower quality setting instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No. JPEG compression throws detail away when the photo is saved, and that detail cannot be recovered. PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly, so the PNG looks identical to the JPG — it simply stops further losses when you edit and save again.
Why is my PNG much bigger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless and is tuned for flat colors and sharp edges. Photographs contain noise in every pixel, which lossless compression handles poorly, so a 300 KB photo can easily become 2–4 MB as PNG. That is expected.
Can I make the background transparent?
JPEG has no alpha channel, so the converted PNG is fully opaque. Converting gives you a format that supports transparency; to actually remove a background you still need an editor or a background-removal tool.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser with the canvas API. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the converter keeps working.
