US vs imperial measures
The biggest trap in volume conversion is that US and UK units share names but not sizes. A British pint is 568.26 mL, while an American pint is 473.18 mL, so a UK pint is 1.2009 US pints. Oddly, the fluid ounce goes the other way: the US fl oz (29.57 mL) is larger than the imperial fl oz (28.41 mL).

Cooking conversions
A 12 fl oz soda can holds 354.88 mL, and a 500 mL bottle is 16.91 US fl oz. When a European recipe calls for 2 L of stock, that is 0.528 US gallons, or a little over two quarts. One cubic centimeter equals one milliliter, which is why medicine syringes are marked in either.
Building and landscaping example
Suppliers sell concrete, gravel, and soil by the cubic yard. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so an order of 3 yd³ equals 2.294 m³. A cubic meter is 1,000 liters, which helps when sizing water tanks.
