Bytes Converter

Convert digital storage and data sizes between bits, bytes, decimal units (kB, MB, GB, TB, PB), binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB), and network units (kbit, Mbit, Gbit). It explains why a disk, a file manager, and an internet plan all seem to report different numbers for the same data.

Decimal vs binary prefixes

The SI prefixes kilo, mega, and giga mean powers of 1,000. The IEC binary prefixes kibi, mebi, and gibi mean powers of 1,024. The gap grows with each step:

Decimal Bytes Binary Bytes Difference
1 kB 1,000 1 KiB 1,024 2.4%
1 MB 10^6 1 MiB 1,048,576 4.9%
1 GB 10^9 1 GiB 1,073,741,824 7.4%
1 TB 10^12 1 TiB 1,099,511,627,776 10.0%

Storage example

A new 2 TB SSD holds 2,000,000,000,000 bytes, which your computer may display as 1,862.65 GiB (or "1.81 TB"). No space is missing – it is the same number of bytes counted in a different base. Likewise a 256 GB phone shows about 238.42 GiB before the system files are even counted, and a 4.7 GB DVD is 4.38 GiB.

Bits for bandwidth

Internet speeds are quoted in bits per second, while downloads are shown in bytes. Since 1 byte = 8 bits, a 1 Gbit connection transfers at most 125 MB per second, and a 100 Mbit plan tops out at 12.5 MB/s. Estimating a download time is then simple: a 5 GB game at 12.5 MB/s takes 400 seconds, or about 6.7 minutes.

Tips

Use the full table below the result to see one value in every unit at once. The decimals selector helps with tiny values like single bits. For converting numbers between binary, hex, and decimal, try the All Number Converter, and to turn seconds into minutes or hours use the Time Converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

In the SI (decimal) system a kilobyte (kB) is 1,000 bytes. The binary unit of 1,024 bytes is officially called a kibibyte (KiB). Some operating systems still label KiB as KB, which causes confusion.

Drive makers use decimal units: 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows reports binary units, and that many bytes is about 0.909 TiB or 931.32 GiB, which it labels as GB.

Divide by 8, because a byte has 8 bits. A 100 Mbit/s connection moves at most 12.5 MB per second, before protocol overhead.
