Why area factors are squared
A foot is 0.3048 m, but a square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m². Forgetting to square the length factor is the most common mistake when converting floor plans by hand, and it produces results that are off by a factor of roughly 3 to 10.

Home listings in Europe use square meters, while US listings use square feet. A 120 m² apartment is 1,291.67 ft², and a 1,500 ft² house is 139.35 m². For a single room of 12 × 15 ft, the floor area is 180 ft², or 16.72 m² – useful when buying flooring priced per square meter.

Tips
