REM to Point Converter
Translate a rem value into typographic points. It is useful when a web type scale has to be reproduced in a print stylesheet, a PDF export, or a document template that is measured in pt. Enter the rem value, set the root font size, and read the result.
Two steps in one
First rem becomes pixels, then pixels become points:
pt = rem × root font size × 0.75
The 0.75 factor is fixed: CSS defines 96px and 72pt as one inch each.
| REM | Pixels (16px root) | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 0.75rem | 12px | 9pt |
| 0.875rem | 14px | 10.5pt |
| 1rem | 16px | 12pt |
| 1.5rem | 24px | 18pt |
| 2rem | 32px | 24pt |
Worked example: exporting a type scale for print
A website uses a scale of 1rem body text, 1.25rem subheadings, and 2.25rem page titles with a 16px root. In points that is 12pt, 15pt, and 27pt. A print designer can drop those numbers straight into InDesign or Word, and your @media print block can use the same figures, so the printed brochure matches the site.
If the site uses an 18px root instead, the same scale becomes 13.5pt, 16.875pt, and 30.375pt – enter 18 as the base font size to see this.
Things to keep in mind
- The root font size matters for rem, but not for the px-to-pt step.
- Users who enlarge their browser text change the root, so the on-screen point size changes too; print specs should assume the default.
- Round to a half point for print unless the layout needs more precision.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert rem to points?
Multiply the rem value by the root font size to get pixels, then multiply by 0.75. With a 16px root, 1.5rem = 24px = 18pt.
What is 1rem in pt?
With the default 16px root, 1rem is 12pt. With a 10px root it is 7.5pt, and with an 18px root it is 13.5pt.
Why multiply by 0.75?
CSS defines 1 inch as 96px and as 72pt, so one pixel equals 72 ÷ 96 = 0.75 points.
