- Read the animal, the element (for example Wood Dragon) and the lunar year number.
- Check the date of Chinese New Year in your birth year and the other years that share your animal.
The 12 animals
The Chinese zodiac is a twelve-year cycle. Each year is named after an animal, and traditional stories link each animal to personality traits: the Rat is quick-witted, the Ox dependable, the Tiger brave, the Rabbit gentle, the Dragon ambitious, the Snake wise, the Horse free-spirited, the Goat kind, the Monkey clever, the Rooster observant, the Dog loyal and the Pig generous.
Elements and Yin or Yang
On top of the animal, each year has one of five elements and a polarity. Two consecutive years share an element, the first being Yang and the second Yin. Combining 12 animals with 10 stem pairs gives the 60-year sexagenary cycle. A person born in 1984 is a Wood Rat; someone born in 2000 is a Metal Dragon.
Why the new year matters
Chinese New Year follows the second new moon after the winter solstice. In 2024 it fell on February 10, so a baby born on January 15, 2024 belongs to the Rabbit year while one born on February 11 is a Dragon. The tool shows the new year date for the Gregorian year of your birth so you can see where you stand.
Cultural context
The zodiac is used in festivals, gift traditions, naming and compatibility talks across China, Vietnam, Korea and many other communities. Treat the personality descriptions as folklore and fun, not as a prediction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Chinese zodiac not match my birth year?
The Chinese year starts at the lunar new year, which falls between about January 21 and February 20, not on January 1. If you were born in January or early February, your animal is usually the one from the previous year. This tool checks the real lunar calendar for your date.
What are the 12 animals in order?
Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (Sheep), Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. The cycle repeats every twelve years.
What is the element of my Chinese zodiac year?
There are five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each element covers two consecutive years (one Yang, one Yin), so the full cycle of animal and element repeats every 60 years. For example 2024 is a Wood Dragon year.
Does the Chinese zodiac depend on birth time?
The year animal depends only on the date. Traditional Chinese astrology also assigns an animal to the month, day and two-hour period of birth (the Four Pillars), which needs the exact time of birth.
