Why count sentences?

Teachers and students use sentence counts for essay requirements, writers use average sentence length to keep prose readable, and SEO editors check that web copy isn't made of long, hard-to-scan sentences. Readability formulas like Flesch–Kincaid depend on it too – see our Flesch-Kincaid Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

For web content, 15–20 words per sentence is easy to read. Sentences longer than 25 words are flagged because they are harder to follow; consider splitting them.
