Markdown Table Generator

The Markdown table generator converts spreadsheet data into a correctly formatted GitHub Flavored Markdown table. Writing tables by hand in Markdown is tedious — every row needs pipes, the header needs a separator line, and the columns only look tidy if you pad them with spaces. Paste your data and the generator does all of that for you.

Input formats

  • Cells copied from Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice, or Numbers (tab-separated).
  • CSV with comma or semicolon delimiters, including quoted values that contain commas.
  • An existing Markdown table that you want to clean up or realign.

Leave the delimiter on Auto detect and the tool picks the right one from the first line.

Options

  • Alignment – default, left (:---), center (:---:), or right (---:) for all columns. Right alignment is ideal for numbers and prices.
  • First row is header – when off, generic "Column 1, Column 2…" headers are added, because Markdown tables always need a header row.
  • Align columns – pads cells with spaces so the raw Markdown is readable in a text editor and in code review. Turn it off for the most compact output.

Example

A row like React,JavaScript,225000 becomes | React | JavaScript | 225000 |, and a separator line such as | --- | --- | --- | is inserted after the header. Rows with fewer cells than the header are filled with empty cells, so the table never breaks.

Where Markdown tables work

GitHub and GitLab READMEs, issues, and wikis; documentation sites built with Docusaurus, MkDocs, or VitePress; static blogs; Obsidian and other note apps; and chat tools with Markdown support.

Preview the table in the Markdown Viewer, convert HTML tables with HTML to Markdown, or explore spreadsheet data in the CSV Viewer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Copied spreadsheet cells are tab-separated; auto-detect recognises them and builds the table immediately.

Wrap the value in double quotes, as in standard CSV: "Paris, France". Doubled quotes inside a quoted value become a single quote character.

Yes. Paste the Markdown table and choose Pipe (or Auto detect). The separator row is ignored and the table is rebuilt with aligned columns and your chosen alignment.

Pipes inside cells are escaped as \| so they do not split the column.
