HTML Stripper – Remove HTML Tags from Text

The HTML stripper removes every HTML tag from a piece of markup and leaves only the text. It is the quickest way to turn a web page fragment, a CMS field, or an email body into plain text that you can paste into a spreadsheet, a database, or a plain-text message.

What gets removed

  • All tags, opening and closing, including attributes — <p class="lead"> simply disappears.
  • Script, style, noscript, and template blocks are removed with their contents, so no stray JavaScript or CSS remains.
  • Comments and doctype declarations are dropped.
  • Block elements such as paragraphs, headings, list items, and table cells become line breaks, so words from neighbouring blocks do not run together.

Options

  • Keep tags – a whitelist. Type a, b, i to keep links and basic formatting while removing everything else. Useful when a forum or comment field only accepts a few tags.
  • Decode entities – converts &amp; to &, &nbsp; to a space, &copy; to ©, and so on.
  • Collapse blank lines – trims trailing spaces and reduces runs of empty lines to a single blank line.

Common uses

Strip HTML before counting words, before sending a text-only SMS or push notification, when cleaning scraped data, or when a description field in a product feed must not contain markup. Developers often use it to check what search engines and screen readers see as the plain text of a template.

Privacy

The stripping runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste is sent to a server, so it is safe for private documents and internal content.

For nicely formatted plain text with bullets and link URLs, use HTML to Text. To keep the HTML but remove inline styles and Word junk, use the HTML Cleaner.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are removed together with their contents, so you will not see JavaScript or CSS code in the output. HTML comments are removed as well.

Yes. Enter tag names in "Keep tags", separated by commas or spaces (for example: a, b, strong). Those tags stay untouched with their attributes; every other tag is removed.

It turns HTML entities like &amp;, &lt;, and &nbsp; back into the characters they represent. Turn it off if you plan to paste the result back into HTML.

The stripper simply deletes tags and keeps line structure. HTML to Text also formats lists with bullets, numbers ordered lists, and appends link URLs, producing more readable plain text.
