JSON Stringify
Convert JSON to an escaped JSON string.
JSON Stringify Online – Convert JSON to an Escaped String
JSON stringify converts JSON into a string: the document is serialized, wrapped in quotes, and every double quote, backslash, and line break is escaped. Use it whenever JSON has to travel inside a string — JSON encode, JSON serialize, and "JSON to string" all mean this operation.
When you need a JSON string
- Nested payloads – GraphQL variables, webhook bodies, and message queue events often carry JSON inside a string field.
- Configuration – environment variables, Kubernetes secrets, and CI settings frequently hold JSON as one string.
- Code – embedding a JSON fixture as a string literal in a test, or building a request body in a shell script.
- Databases – storing JSON documents in plain text columns.
Options
- Inner JSON – minify the document before stringifying (smallest result) or keep it pretty-printed; line breaks then become
\n. - Wrap as – a standard JSON string in double quotes, a JavaScript single-quoted literal, or just the escaped body without outer quotes.
Example
{"name": "Ann", "note": "Say "hi""} becomes
"{"name":"Ann","note":"Say \"hi\""}"
It looks busy, but it's what JSON.stringify(JSON.stringify(data)) produces in JavaScript, and it parses back to the same data.
Privacy and accuracy
The conversion uses the browser's native JSON serializer, so the escaping matches what JavaScript, Python's json.dumps, and PHP's json_encode produce. Your data is processed locally and never uploaded, which matters when payloads contain tokens, personal data, or internal configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does JSON stringify do?
It turns a JSON value into a JSON string literal: the whole document is wrapped in double quotes and every quote, backslash, and line break inside it is escaped. The result can be stored as a single string value — for example inside another JSON document, an environment variable, or a database column.
Is this the same as JSON.stringify in JavaScript?
It's JSON.stringify applied twice: first to serialize your data to JSON text, then again to turn that text into an escaped string. That's exactly what you need when an API expects a JSON payload inside a string field.
When do I need the 'No quotes' option?
When you paste the value between quotes that already exist, for example in a template or a code line like body: "...". The escapes are kept, only the outer quotes are removed.
How do I reverse it?
Use Unstringify JSON. It removes the outer quotes and escapes (even from JSON that was stringified several times) and gives you formatted JSON again.
