How to format JSON

Why pretty-print JSON?
Minified JSON is great for machines and bandwidth, but hard for people. Indentation reveals the structure: which fields belong to which object, how deep arrays are nested, and where a value is missing. Formatted JSON is also much easier to review in pull requests, because each property lands on its own line and a diff shows exactly what changed.
Sorting keys
The JSON specification says object keys are unordered, so two documents with the same data can look very different. Turning on Sort keys A–Z orders keys alphabetically at every level. This is useful before comparing two responses, committing a config file, or generating a stable snapshot for tests. Frequently Asked Questions
Does beautifying change my data?
No. The beautifier parses the JSON and prints the same values again with line breaks and indentation. Keys, values, and array order stay exactly as they were unless you turn on “Sort keys A–Z”, which only reorders object keys.
Why do I get an 'Invalid JSON' error?
The input must be strict JSON: keys and strings in double quotes, no trailing commas, no comments, and no single quotes. The error message shows the line and column where parsing stopped. For JSON that is almost right, the JSON Fixer can repair the usual mistakes automatically.
Should I use 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or tabs?
It's a matter of style. Two spaces is the most common choice in JavaScript projects and API documentation, four spaces is popular in Python and Java code bases, and tabs let every reader pick their own width. Pick whatever matches your project's editor settings.
Is my JSON uploaded anywhere?
No. Formatting runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript's native JSON parser, so API responses, tokens, or customer data never leave your computer.
