When you need numbers instead of a name

CSS understands color: Crimson, but many other environments do not:

• Canvas and WebGL shaders take channels as numbers (often divided by 255).
• Python libraries like Pillow and Matplotlib accept (220, 20, 60) tuples.
• Arduino and LED strips set each channel with a 0–255 PWM value.
• Unity and Godot color constructors expect separate components.

Looking up the name once and pasting the tuple saves a round trip through a design tool.

Watch out for the gray family

The gray names are a trap when you pick by word alone. Ordered from dark to light, the RGB values run DimGray (105), Gray (128), DarkGray (169), Silver (192), LightGray (211). Measured with the CIEDE2000 color-difference formula, DarkGray and Gray are a full ΔE 13.5 apart – a clearly visible step – whereas LightGray and Silver are only ΔE 4.69 apart and easy to confuse on screen. CIEDE2000 rates differences the way the eye does, so these scores reflect what you actually see on screen. If you need an evenly spaced gray ramp, pick RGB values yourself rather than relying on the names.
