CMYK to HSV Converter

Type four ink percentages such as cmyk(80%, 30%, 0%, 10%) – or just 80 30 0 10 – and read the matching HSV (HSB) value: hsv(202.5, 80%, 90%). A preview swatch, a color picker, and a table with HEX, RGB, HSL, and the closest CSS color name appear alongside the result.

Why go from print values to HSV

CMYK describes how much ink lands on paper, which makes it awkward to reason about when you want to adjust a color. HSV splits the same color into three intuitive controls: hue (position on the color wheel), saturation (how pure it is), and value (how bright). Converting a brand's print spec to HSV lets you build lighter or muted variants for a website by moving a single slider instead of juggling four ink amounts.

The math, step by step

Take cmyk(80%, 30%, 0%, 10%):

  1. RGB: R = 255 × 0.2 × 0.9 = 45.9, G = 255 × 0.7 × 0.9 = 160.65, B = 255 × 1 × 0.9 = 229.5.
  2. Value = max / 255 = 229.5 / 255 = 90% – exactly 1 − K.
  3. Saturation = (229.5 − 45.9) / 229.5 = 80% – the same as the cyan ink, because yellow is 0.
  4. Hue: blue is the largest channel, so H = 60 × ((R − G) / (max − min) + 4) = 202.5°.

Quick reference

CMYK HSV HEX
0, 100, 100, 0 0°, 100%, 100% #FF0000
0, 20, 60, 20 40°, 60%, 80% #CCA352
100, 0, 0, 50 180°, 100%, 50% #008080
80, 30, 0, 10 202.5°, 80%, 90% #2EA1E6

Notice the pattern: the K channel alone sets brightness, while the spread between the inks sets saturation.

Things to keep in mind

The formula is profile-free, so rich blacks and heavy ink totals (over 300%) collapse into the same dark HSV values. For hand-off to developers, you may prefer a single code – see CMYK to HEX – or go the other way with HSV to CMYK.

Frequently Asked Questions

First turn CMYK into RGB with R = 255 × (1 − C) × (1 − K), and the same for green with M and blue with Y. Then take V as the largest RGB channel divided by 255, S as (max − min) / max, and the hue from which channel is largest. The converter does both steps at once.

When at least one of C, M, or Y is 0, that channel reaches the full 255 × (1 − K), so the brightest channel and therefore V equals 1 − K. A black of 10% gives a value of 90%.

Yes. HSV (hue, saturation, value) and HSB (hue, saturation, brightness) are two names for the same model. Photoshop and Affinity label it HSB, while most code libraries call it HSV.

No. It uses the standard device-independent formula that treats CMYK as a simple subtraction from RGB. Real press output depends on paper, inks, and profiles such as FOGRA39 or GRACoL, so treat the result as a screen approximation.
