Java Beautifier – Format Java Code Online

The Java beautifier formats Java source code with clang-format, the LLVM project's battle-tested code formatter, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs directly in your browser. Paste a class, a method, or an entire file and get consistently indented, readable Java back.

What it formats

  • Packages, imports, classes, interfaces, enums, and records.
  • Generics, annotations, lambdas, method references, and the stream API.
  • switch expressions, text blocks, var, and try-with-resources.
  • Long method chains and parameter lists are wrapped according to the column limit.

Style presets

clang-format ships with the coding styles of well-known projects:

  • LLVM – 2-space indentation in LLVM itself (configurable here), braces on the same line.
  • Google – Google's style guide; the usual choice for Java and many C++ projects.
  • Chromium and Mozilla – the browsers' variants of the Google and LLVM styles.
  • WebKit – 4-space indentation, function braces on their own line.
  • Microsoft – Allman braces (every brace on its own line), common in C# and Windows code.
  • GNU – the GNU coding standards with half-indented braces.

You can override the indentation (2 or 4 spaces or tabs) and the column limit (80, 100, 120, or no limit) on top of any preset.

For Java, the Google preset is selected by default because it matches the widely used Google Java Style Guide closely.

How to use it

  1. Paste Java code, open a .java file, or click Sample.
  2. Pick a style preset, indentation, and column limit.
  3. Copy or download the formatted code.

Limitations

clang-format is a formatter, not a compiler. It does not check types or report compile errors, and it formats even incomplete code as well as it can. It also does not reorder members or organize imports — your IDE's "Organize Imports" is the right tool for that.

Format JSON payloads with the JSON Beautifier, XML configuration such as pom.xml with the XML Beautifier, and SQL in your repositories with the SQL Beautifier. C# developers can use the C# Beautifier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not exactly. The Google preset in clang-format follows the same style guide, so the result is very close, but google-java-format is a separate tool and may wrap some long lines differently.

No. It only formats whitespace and line breaks. Use javac or your IDE to find compile errors.

clang-format handles modern Java syntax including records, switch expressions, text blocks, and lambdas.
